A Brief Overview
Develops, drafts and produces reinsurance treaties of superior quality for management and client approval. Ensures that treaty documents (treaties, renewals)
accurately reflect the reinsurance terms agreed to by RGA and its client and meet or exceed all regulatory and corporate requirements and procedures. Reviews, where applicable, client drafted documentation to ensure same. Escalates issues and language outside guideline parameters as required. Must have the ability to do this in English and Spanish language. Responsibility for leading and managing the Latin America reinsurance treaty team, ensuring the protection of RGA's business interests and risk management through comprehensive understanding of RGA best practices, effective negotiation, escalation and treaty processes, and prompt completion of treaty documentation. Which includes: Coordination of treaty activities for the Latin America business including effective use of templates (local and global accounts), adopting procedures and following guidelines with the local treaty team and local stakeholders, assigning or staying abreast of issues and activities in order to meet all deadlines (internal and external clients).
Develops and maintain a professional working relationship with client's treaty counterparts and within other departments/functions within RGA to facilitate effective negotiation, efficient resolution and implementation of best practices whenever possible for treaty related issues. Gain market knowledge and stay abreast of reinsurance business practices and trends that may affect the local treaty function and ensure it has appropriate infrastructure in place. Responsible for ensuring that the local treaty templates are modified as required, (via RGA documented means) to meet the needs of the business and comply with corporate standards, regulations, and that local processes adhere to corporate compliance policies and other treaty governance procedures. Overseeing license registrations and its corresponding annual renewals of RGA entities in the LA jurisdiction; searching local regulations, obtaining,
and producing RGA entity documentation and submitted to local insurance Regulators (directly, through Clients or local external legal representatives as required). Identify opportunities and drive process improvements; contribute to the development and maintenance of local treaty initiatives to build the local treaty infrastructure and to improve services.
What you will do
- Develops, drafts, and produces reinsurance treaties for management and client approval as required. Provides sound expertise and advice on treaty terms and language to internal clients and ensures that treaty documents (treaties, renewals, amendments, and addendums) accurately reflect the reinsurance terms agreed to by RGA and its client and meet corporate, business, functional compliance policies and procedures. Reviews, where applicable, client drafted documentation to ensure same.
Escalates issues and language outside guideline parameters as required. Inputs and/or logs the treaties into the tools or system that RGA defines as the treaty system.
- Leading the LTA Treaty Operations via the following: Develop and put in place an infrastructure to ensure RGA keeps abreast of trends and best practices that may affect the treaty function (regulations, competitors, and clients); identify, log and monitor key developments and ensure a company/business position on key issues is addressed.
- Recommend/drive process improvements through various activities such as reviewing internal controls and working closely with VP, International Treaties, Global Legal Services and other functional groups as required. Develop and maintain local treaty manuals and procedures as required.
- Provide training to local associates as requested,
provide guidance and expertise to other members/functions of the local business unit on treaty matters. Acts as a subject matter expert and resource to both associates, management and clients for treaty interpretation and questions. Ensure treaty standards and service standards requirements are adhered to by reinforcing communication of best practices and procedures.
- Works with all departments in the Life and Health Reinsurance division and other departments within RGA to identify and resolve treaty problems/issues. Develop relationships with client companies and seek positive resolution to issues and escalate as needed.
- Organizes the preparation of monthly and annual reports and ensures reinsurance information has been recorded accurately. Works with various systems/applications to produce reports, identify value add data,
new reports and seek implementation of same. Monitor status of outstanding treaties to ensure service standards are met and report/escalate to management, RGA’s boards, and International Treaties as required. Ensure timeliness of treaty document development, escalation, follow ups, etc to ensure that outstanding documents are finalized in a timely manner.
- Oversee RGA entities license registrations in Latin American jurisdictions, which includes consulting with corresponding internal legal counsel. Process translations and obtain corresponding authorizations for payments of associated expenses. Keeping informed dedicated internal LTA legal counsel and LA business as well (filing proper proof of annual renewals).
- Provide backup to other members of the Local Treaty team as needed.
Works closely with members of the treaty functional team and other functional groups to address and meet the requests of the LTA office. Guides and serves as an initial escalation point for the local operations on treaty matters. Maintains relationships with RGA Int’l Toronto and other local offices and associates to facilitate effective and efficient resolution of treaty documents.
Qualifications
- Fifth year college or university program certificate Paralegal degree or bachelor’s degree or equivalent related experience in insurance, reinsurance, or law related positions. required
- 10+ Years Legal or contract drafting experience. required
- 5+ Years Experience in insurance/reinsurance services. required
- 5+ Years Experience in treaty development. preferred
- 3+ Years Knowledge and experience in Group Life & Health Industry preferred
- Advanced skills in Word; Basic skills in Outlook and Excel required
- Takes initiative and is accountable required
